Hills and Valleys (Deluxe Edition) Music Review

Known as the former frontman for Grammy nominated band Royal Tailor and now pursuing a solo career, Tauren Wells released his debut album “Hills and Valleys” back in the beginning of July with songs anchored in God, his love, victory, and sovereignty.

The album features 15 tracks, four of which were featured on Wells EP “Undefeated” released back in 2016 and garnered the hit song “Love in Action” while also featuring his original demos and pop and R&B singer Hollyn, rapper KB and newcomer Davies

Ranging in a variety of genres from, pop, hip-hop, R&B, dance and acoustic, Wells creates a unique and powerful album providing listeners with not only ecstatic and upbeat tunes, but also themes of faith and overcoming obstacles as well as celebrating the small victories in life.

The opening song “When We Pray” does not shy away from demonstrating Wells soothing and harmonious voice. Nor does it shy away from its theme serving as a reminder of how powerful prayer is when the church as a whole comes together in faith while also giving a nod to 2 Chronicles 7:14

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Another song which stands out from the album titled “God’s Not Done with You” serves as an anthem of hope during the darkest times of someone’s life. Although the song speaks of hard times, it is the chorus and bridge of the song that hooks listeners, reminding them that even in the midst of it all God will never abandon you and there is a plan and purpose for your life.

The title track for the album “Hills and Valleys” of course stands out in comparison to the other songs listed not only with its message of hope and moving forward, but the song itself offers a catchy and soothing melody that draws listeners in.

After all, “Hills and Valleys” has been featured many times on the radio since its release and continues to be very popular among many, with the song remaining at No. 3 on the Billboard charts “Hot Christian Songs” while the album itself stands at No. 18.

Wells even offers his own cover of Earth Wind and Fire’s iconic song “September” in which he keeps the R&B funk of the original tune rather than a rehashed or “copycat” version as, sadly, many artists tend to do nowadays.

In summary, this album offers something for everyone. The fast and upbeat songs provide a joyous feel to the album while the slower tunes help captivate the overall theme of love. It is a great listen for anyone needing a pick-me-up or spiritual encouragement.

If you have not listened to Wells’ new album or have yet to be acquainted with the young artist, check out his video for “Hills and Valleys” posted below.
