Church of England a Hit on Social Media

Latest figures showed that the Church of England is reaching more than a million people every month through social media.

The Church started using social media last year in sharing the Christian message. It has published videos, podcasts, blogs, prayers, apps, and launched various campaigns online.

In a month, the Church of England reaches 1.2 million people through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Prayers posted during critical events in the country were viewed over 1.3 million times.

According to statistics, over 22,000 people use the Church’s Daily Prayer app monthly, while House Publishing apps were downloaded more than 350,000 times. In just one year, the Church has tripled the number of followers on Facebook and Instagram, most of whom are under 34 years old.

Sam Donoghue, head of children and youth ministry support in the Diocese of London, revealed that the diocese has allotted $3.96 million in different projects to attract the youth to church.

The Church of England said social media is a great platform in explaining the work of the Church and sharing the gospel. It revealed that prayers posted during critical events in the country were viewed over 1.3 million times.

The Church’s online community is more active than its worshiping community, or the number of people who come to church at least once a month. A new Mission Statistics showed that the average Sunday attendance at Church of England is at a new low of 780,000.

William Nye, Secretary General to the General Synod, said the Church of England is committed to spreading the Good News in every generation. He added that the new figures meant that the Church still has a lot of challenges to face in the years to come, reports The Telegraph.

While its online audience is remarkable, “our challenge is to join up that growing online Church life to the physical community of Church that forms the body of Christ,” said Nye.

Sam Donoghue, head of children and youth ministry support in the Diocese of London, revealed that the diocese has allotted $3.96 million in different projects to attract the youth to church.

He said gone were the days when young people think that the church is uncool. “Some of them are exploring our churches as safe places. They’re solid buildings, the repository of tradition.”
